The days leading up to the annual Met Gala are always filled with palpable excitement as Hollywood starlets scramble to find fabulous frocks and designers work overtime to make sure their pieces are perfect before being paraded down the red carpet.

This year, however, that pre-gala period had a black cloud hanging over it as the unthinkable was announced: Kim Kardashian would be attending this year’s event.

That’s right. The much-maligned reality star somehow landed an invitation to the fashion world’s biggest night, where A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Katie Holmes rub elbows with fabled designers — from Diane Von Furstenberg to Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang — and fashion plates like Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively.

The mom-to-be hit the red carpet Monday night with her baby daddy Kanye West, and while “Punk: Chaos to Couture” was the theme for the evening, it looked like Kardashian had mistakenly thought it was “gardening.”

The 31-year-old donned a head-to-toe floral patterned Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci gown. And we mean head-to-toe. The dress featured long sleeves, a high neck, gloves, and even shoes in the same pattern. The fitted frock also prominently showed off her baby bump.

“I love fashion and I really am excited to see everyone’s take on punk,” Kardashian told Vogue as she made her way into the style soiree. “I know it’s different for everyone and everyone has their own take on it.”

And no, she never went through a punk phase. “I really didn’t. That’s why I think Riccardo’s vision of punk for me is the subtle version.”

Her main squeeze also went with a Tisci ensemble, though he kept things quite a bit simpler in his black suit and plain white dress shirt.

West, 35, attended the event last year, but his girlfriend was noticeably absent from his arm and rumors swirled that Vogue editor-in-chief and gala co-host Anna Wintour had banned the reality star.

Oh, how times have changed. This year Kardashian not only made the star-studded guest list, she was also invited to dine with West at Wintour’s Manhattan home the night before. (Yes, really!)

As for how Kardashian wound up receiving the royal treatment this time around, some have speculated that Tisci, one of the evening’s co-hosts called in the favor since he’s close with West.

Kim, you owe him one.
