Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, has thumbed down the current form of the senior national team.
He said the team’s performance recently fell short of excellence such that they do not merit to be called Super Eagles but should be stepped down to just Eagles.
However, the former Arsenal FC of England star noted that with hard work, the Eagles can return to their character.
This, he said, should be sooner than later.
The Super Eagles went below par after winning the African Nations Cup title at South Africa 2013.
Failure to qualify for the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea represented a lowest point but Kanu said the Super Eagles will soon regain its position as a force to reckon with in world football.
“There is a rebuilding process currently underway and I am a big part of it,” Kanu, who was in Nelspruit to watch Nigeria’s friendly international against South Africa, said.
The former Super Eagles striker, who also played for Ajax and Inter Milan, added: “things must be put right” for the Eagles to hit the heights again.
“During my days as a footballer, the whole world took notice of Nigeria as a very strong footballing country.
“We must return our national team to those days. To be honest, we are not there yet but we want to put things right so we will attain such heights again.
“I am sure we will achieve this,” he said.
Kanu earned 87 international caps for Nigeria in a career between 1994 and 2011.
