The Kano Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency says the availability of drugs in public health facilities across the state has increased from about 30 per cent to more than 90 per cent within three years.
Director-General of the agency, Gali Sule, disclosed this on Monday during a news conference in Kano.
The briefing was organised as part of activities marking the third anniversary of Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
Sule said the occasion also coincided with the third anniversary of his appointment as head of the agency, which falls on July 16.
According to him, the anniversary provided an opportunity to review the agency’s progress, achievements and future direction.
He said the agency was established to procure and distribute quality and affordable medicines, as well as medical consumables, to government-owned health facilities.
Sule explained that when the current administration came into office in 2023, drug availability in public health centres stood at about 30 per cent.
He said many essential medicines were unavailable at the time, creating difficulties for patients and health workers.
The director-general said consistent government support and reforms in the medical supply system had changed the situation significantly.
According to him, medicine and medical commodity availability has now risen to more than 90 per cent across public health facilities in Kano State.
He described the improvement as a major achievement that had attracted recognition within and outside the state.
Sule said the level of progress recorded within three years was beyond what many stakeholders initially expected.
He also disclosed that the agency inherited about N1.2 billion in debts owed to pharmaceutical suppliers.
According to him, the liabilities were fully cleared by January 2026.
Sule said the payment of the inherited debts helped restore confidence among suppliers and strengthened the state’s drug supply chain.
He described the debt clearance as one of the major milestones of the agency under the present administration.
The director-general added that the achievement earned Governor Abba Yusuf an Award of Excellence and Appreciation from the Association of Nigerian Industrial Pharmacists.
He said the award would be presented on July 16 in recognition of the governor’s commitment to clearing the outstanding pharmaceutical debts.
Sule further said activities marking the anniversary began with Quranic recitation and special prayers.
He said the prayers were offered for Nigeria, Kano State, Governor Yusuf, the Ministry of Health and other leaders.
The agency said it remains committed to improving access to quality, affordable and reliable medicines in public health facilities across Kano State.
