Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu, has called on Nigerians at home and abroad to be patient with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in its fight against corruption.
He made this known on Monday while hosting a cross section of African students of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst to a dinner at the Aviator Hotel, Farnborough, United Kingdom.
According to the former governor, the level of abuse of office by the immediate past administration is condemnable in strong terms, noting that some political office holders at the federal level raped the country of tax payer’s money and other resources at the expense of the common man.
Kalu said: “It is unfortunate that President Buhari met the country in a terrible state. The nation’s resources were looted in no small measure by the last administration leaving Nigerians with decaying infrastructure, high rate of unemployment, insecurity and abject poverty among others.
“It is important for the new government to expedite action on the investigation of the looting of the nation’s treasury, recover the stolen funds and make the perpetrators of the negative act face the wrath of the law.
“Leaders at all levels of government should emulate the modest lifestyle of Mr. President by cutting down on frivolous expenses in the interest of the masses and the nation at large”
The former governor used the opportunity to commend the efforts of Gen. T.Y. Danjuma, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, Sen. Bukola Saraki, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, Mallam Garba Sadi, Sen. Annie Okonkwo, Sen. Chris Nigige among others in building a strong coalition that ushered in the new government, adding that the Nigeria project is paramount.
Kalu also reiterated his conviction in the agitation for self determination by the Igbo People of Biafra (IPOB) as defined by the United Nations, adding that as a firm believer in the indivisible Nigeria, government should correct the imbalance facing the Igbo nation for the sake of peaceful co-existence.
He called on the officers not to lose hope in Africa, noting that there are untapped potential in Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf officers, Moussa Camara from Guinea commended the former governor for sustaining the gesture of hosting of the officers on a yearly basis, adding that the officers will continue to be good ambassadors of Africa.
