The Jigawa Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, in connection with the death of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, following a fire incident in Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Dutse on Tuesday.

According to Shiisu, Ibrahim, who allegedly claimed to be of unsound mind, reportedly entered his elder brother’s residence, poured petrol inside the room and set it ablaze.

Basiru Shuaibu and his wife reportedly sustained serious burns in the incident.

The injured couple were taken by relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. Shuaibu later died from his injuries while receiving treatment.

The police spokesperson said the suspect had been arrested and the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the suspect’s alleged mental state and the motive for the attack, remain subject to police investigation.

The Jigawa Police Command also disclosed the detention of a 20-year-old suspect over an alleged stabbing incident.

According to the command, the suspect was arrested on Oct. 1 after allegedly stabbing a 25-year-old man following a dispute over a ₦500 balance from the purchase of a mobile phone.

The police did not provide further details on the condition of the victim in the information supplied.

The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa, Mr Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities, threats and disputes promptly to the police or other relevant security agencies.

The commissioner assured residents that the command would continue to take firm action against suspected offenders.
