Israel has made numerous documents, video and audio recordings of the Yom Kippur War available to the public for the first time, 50 years after the conflict.

On Thursday, the Israeli State Archives published the contents of 1,400 document files, around 1,000 photos, 850 audio and video recordings and more than 250 shorthand notes.

State Archivist, Ruti Abramovitz said that the sorting and processing of the material had taken two and a half years.

The aim was to show all facets of the war, which affected all areas of life in Israel.

The newly released material included documents from then-prime minister Golda Meir’s office, reports from the frontlines, and information about post-war negotiations.

On October 6, 1973, a coalition of Arab states, led by Egypt and Syria, attacked Israel unexpectedly on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days of the Jewish calendar.

The war lasted 19 days.

Fighting took place mainly in the Sinai Peninsula and on the Golan Heights.

Israeli records indicated that 2,656 of its soldiers were killed.
