Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reaffirmed his country’s right to defend its sovereignty, describing it as “inalienable” and fundamental under international norms.

Pezeshkian made the statement during a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where both leaders discussed escalating tensions in the region and bilateral relations.

According to a statement from the Iranian presidency, the discussion focused on the impact of the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict involving Iran, as well as broader security concerns in the Middle East.

The Iranian leader maintained that Tehran did not initiate the conflict, alleging that military actions by the United States and Israel occurred during ongoing nuclear negotiations.

He further claimed that the attacks resulted in the deaths of senior officials, including Iran’s then Supreme Leader, military personnel, and civilians, as well as damage to public infrastructure.

Pezeshkian stressed that Iran remains committed to regional peace and stability, while also seeking stronger cooperation with neighbouring countries.

He also linked tensions in the Strait of Hormuz to the ongoing conflict, noting that Iran has taken steps to ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the area.

In his response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the situation and extended condolences to the Iranian government and people over reported casualties.

Sharif commended Iran for ensuring safe passage for Pakistani vessels through the strategic waterway and called for collective regional efforts to reduce tensions.

He reiterated Pakistan’s support for Iran, emphasising the need for dialogue and cooperation to restore peace and stability in the region.
