The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC),Gombe State chapter has rejected plans by the State government to appoint caretaker committees to the 11 Local Government Areas of the state.

Mr Abubakar Aliyu, the Publicly Secretary of IPAC in the State, stated this while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Gombe.

Aliyu described the plan by the state government elections as illegal.

“The appointment of caretakers to serve and supervise the administrative functions of the local government as chairmen is unconstitutional, illegal,  null and void,“he said.

The publicity secretary said with the expiration of the tenure of all the elected chairmen of the respective LGAs, the state government ought to have begun preparation for election.

“It is on record that on Dec. 19 the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Gombe State issued a notification on the expiration of the tenure of LGA/handing over notes.

Aliyu said the  approval of the request by the Gombe State House of Assembly was worrisome and should be stopped in the interest of the development of the councils in the state.

“We call on the Gombe State Government  to make arrangement to conduct local Government election in Gombe State,” he said.

Also speaking, the former chairman of IPAC in the state, Alhaji Saleh Lawan urged the government to conduct elections in line with the provisions of the constitution.

Lawan said if the government fails to come up with modalities to conduct election in this regard within a month, IPAC would be forced to take the matter to court.

He said the local government remained a critical arm of government that needed to be strengthened democratically, towards fast-tracking the development of the state and country.
