IOC wants to be involved in Japan 2020 Olympics Stadium design

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach, on Wednesday, said the Committee would be involved in redesigning Japan’s Olympics Stadium for the 2020 games to ensure `no more surprises.’
Bach said this after Tokyo earlier scrapped the original design.
“We want to be involved in the tender so that the tender will be put together in a way that all Olympic requirements are taken into consideration.
“And that there are no surprises in one year or in half a year neither for the (Tokyo) government nor for the IOC,’’ Bach told a news conference.
Earlier in July, Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, ordered the scrapping of the original design of Tokyo’s Olympic stadium amid public criticism over cost concern put at 252 billion yen, approximately $2 billion.
Report says it would have made it the most expensive sports stadium ever.
According to Bach, as far as he is concerned, a stadium that meets the Olympic requirements should have an excellent 400 metre track.
“You can be sure there will be no exaggerated requirements, it is thrust to ensure the best conditions for the athletes,’’ he said.
In spite of the scrapping of the original design for the stadium, Bach expressed confidence that Japan could deliver a state of the art venue for the athletes and spectators in time for the 2020 summer Games.
Bach also said that he expected to have a successful 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as the organisers have been working earnestly in addressing all challenges they currently faced.
“They are preparing very well, we are very confident we will have great Games one year from now,’’ he said.
