pius_ewheridoIndependent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said it had made adequate arrangements with the security agents to ensure hitch free bye-election into the Delta Central Senatorial seat.

The Electoral Officer of Uvwie Local Government Area, Mr Kingsley Ogbegbe told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Warri that INEC had made arrangement with the Nigerian Army, Navy and the police to provide security.

He said that the electoral materials had arrived, adding that Corps members would be used in the conduct of the election.

Ogbegbe said 600 polling points and 125 polling units in the local government would be manned by the corps members.

He said that accreditation of voters would start by 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon after which voting will begin immediately and ends by 5:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ekpan Police Division, Mr Akabue Kenneth, has urged the electorate to conduct themselves properly during the Saturday bye-election.

Kenneth, a chief superintendent of police, told NAN that his men were ready to ensure hitch free bye-election and counter any challenge that may arise from the bye-election.

He said that the police had the full backing of the AIG Zone 5 and the Delta Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba.

Kenneth said that the Saturday bye-election would be a litmus test that free and fair election could be held in Delta as the case of Edo and Ondo state.

The DPO said that in Uvwie Local Government Area, where he controls, three policemen would be deployed to the each of the 125 polling units.

He also said that there would be more than 200 policemen on standby during the election.

Also in an interview, the President-General, Urhobo Progressive Union, Gen. Patrick Aziza (rtd), advised eligible voters to turn out in large number and cast their votes.

The Delta Central Senatorial District comprised of Ughelli-North, Ughelli-South, Ethiope-West, Ethiope-East, Okpe, Sapele, Udu and Uvwie Local Government Councils.

The Delta Central Senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Sen. Pius Ewherido on June 30.
