The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it had postponed the House of Assembly bye-election in Sokoto State from July 6 to July 13.
The bye-election is to fill the vacant position in Gada West Constituency following the assassination of the incumbent, Alhaji Attahiru Wauru, on June 3.
This is contained in a statement signed by Alhaji Muhammad Musa, the Head of Public Affairs of the commission in the state in Sokoto on Saturday.
According to the statement, the shift in the date is to allow the political parties to comply with Section 87(1) of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended.
The section, the statement added, mandates the political parties to conduct primary elections before fielding any candidates for an election.
“Fourteen political parties have complied with the directive and conducted primary elections on June 30.
“That date was the deadline and the following electoral wards were affected: Kadadin Buda, Kyadawa/ Holai, Kiri, Kadassak and Kwarma,’’ it stated.
There were 82 polling units in the six wards, which had 64,440 registered voters.
It also stated that the commission would deploy 301 ad hoc staff for the poll drawn from the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) and the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
