The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the March 5 Anambra Central Senatorial District re-run election indefinitely.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, Dr Lawrence Azubuike, made the disclosure in Awka on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ forum in respect of the postponed election.
Azubuike said he received a directive from the National Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and the commission’s Commissioner in-charge of elections, Hajia Amina Zakari, to postpone the exercise.
He said the postponement was because of a court order restraining INEC from conducting the election.
Azubike said that as a law abiding organisation, INEC had put off the exercise to a future date.
He appealed to stakeholders to bear with the commission and assured them that they would be communicated as soon as INEC gave a new directive on the exercise.
Reacting to the development, the state Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Norbert Obi, said that the party accepted the decision.
He said that APGA would be waiting for further directives and added that the party was sure of ‘’victory any other time the election is fixed’’.
The chairman urged members of the party to be faithful and law abiding.
Also, Chief Mathias Emeke, state Chairman of Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), said that he was devastated by the postponement.
Emeke said the postponement was capable of giving room for electoral fraud and cautioned against such development.
He, however, said PPA was ready for the election anytime INEC was ready to conduct the election.
Dr Alex Obigbolu, a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party in the state, said that the party accepted the postponement.
He, however, urged INEC ‘’to do the needful with a view to bringing lasting sanity to the electoral process in the country’’.
