Some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accompanied by security agents, on Tuesday, dumped recall notice documents meant for Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West) at the entrance of his office in Abuja.
The action of the officials was dramatic.
Some legislative aides, who knew they were going to Melaye’s office, were seen trooping out of their offices to watch the scenario.
The officials got to Melaye’s office about 9:55 and knocked. There was no response.
It is believed some aides of the embattled senator were inside the office. But, Melaye, according to a source, was not around.
The officials knocked again. No response. By this time, more legislative aides had gathered near the office to watch the officials.
When they knocked the third time and there was no response, one of them brought out his phone to call.
Apparently, he was on the line with a superior official.
After the call, he told others to dump the documents in front of Melaye’s office. They left immediately.
Efforts to speak with them proved abortive.
On Monday, INEC had accused the Senator of avoiding its officials to receive the recall documents.
But in a swift reaction, Melaye declared that the 90-day deadline had lapsed and that only three out of 188,000 constituents signed the petition to recall him.
