The Imo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for those responsible for the killing of a traditional ruler, Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, and five others in a violent attack in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area.

The development was confirmed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, in Owerri.

According to the police, the monarch, who was the ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community, was attacked by armed assailants on Asa Awara Road in Assa community.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 10, following a distress call received by the Ohaji Police Division.

Police authorities said the attack resulted in the death of the traditional ruler and five other victims, whose identities are yet to be confirmed.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, has deployed tactical units in collaboration with other security agencies to track down the perpetrators.

Security operatives who arrived at the scene recovered the burnt remains of the victims, which have since been moved to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Owerri for autopsy and preservation.

The police stated that a full-scale investigation has been initiated, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the suspects and recover any weapons used in the attack.

Authorities also disclosed that additional security measures have been put in place to prevent further incidents in the affected communities.

Following the attack, the police commissioner and his management team visited Ochia community to assess the situation and reassure residents of improved security.

Bosso expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the state.

The police have urged residents to provide useful information that could assist in the ongoing investigation, assuring that all tips will be treated confidentially.

The incident has heightened concerns over security challenges in Imo State, particularly in rural communities.
