Three of the 33 Caretaker Chairmen of Local Governments in Oyo State have failed in the bid to have their tenure extended by the State House of Assembly.
The uncleared councils were Onaara, Ibadan North East and Itesiwaju.
The house Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, led by Mr Femi Adelakun, had on May 1 conducted performance appraisal for the 33 council chairmen as part of its oversight functions.
Six months tenure of the chairmen, approved by the house in December 2012, will expire on May 8.
However, when the Speaker, Monsurat Sunmonu, read the letter from the executive at a plenary session on Tuesday, it urged the assembly to consider the chairmen who scaled through the screening of the house for another six months tenure.
Consequently, the speaker read out the 30 names of those who were adjudged to have rendered good account and a motion was moved by Mr Adigun Ahmed (ACN), that the tenure of the 30 chairmen be extended.
The motion was seconded by Mr Adesina Adeyemo (ACN). It was unanimously adopted when put to question by the speaker.
The report of the screening, which was slated for presentation before considering the tenure extension, was, however, skipped.
In a reaction, Mr Adeniyi Olarinre, the Caretaker Chairman of Itesiwaju Local Government, who was among those dropped, said he was not aware of the issue.
Mr Adeniyi Farinto (PDP) after the adoption, drew the attention of the house to a publication which alleged that the assembly was rubber-stamping the policy and plans of the executive, especially on the conduct of the local government elections.
Farinto urged the lawmakers to urge the executive and the judiciary to speed up the case of the Oyo State Electoral Commission (OSEC) pending in the an Appeal Court.
He added that the public should know that the house could not intervene in any matter pending before any court of law in the country.
