A Nigerian woman resident in Canada, Mrs Adenike Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, is facing the toughest ordeal of her life, following threats by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to issue a warrant of arrest against her over allegations of witchcraft by her husband’s family.
Some members of the Kekere-Ekun family of Lagos Island have pointedly accused the woman of using witchcraft to cause a series of illness and misfortunes in her husband’s family in Lagos, ostensibly via spiritual remote control.
The woman relocated abroad since September, 2015 to escape the wrath of some members of the extended family.
Impeccable family sources hinted that sometimes in September last year, Mrs Kekere-Ekun was invited all the way from Canada to come and perform a traditional ritual or sacrifice in order to avert a chain of impending misfortunes within the family.
Such rituals were to include bathing in an open river in Lagos, circumcision of her genitals and inflicting multiple incisions on her body parts.
However, the woman was said to have declined to have anything to do with rituals, based on her faith as a Christian and a member of a pentecostal church in Ontario, Canada.
In a strange twist, another member of the family was recently said to have suddenly developed some strange signs of insanity, an omen which the family feared was a result of the woman’s disobedience and reluctance to perform the ritual.
Her refusal to honour the invitation compelled the family to involve the police to assist the family in inviting the woman to Nigeria.
In a letter dated March 18, 2016, ACP Anderson A. Bankole, on behalf of the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau Annex, Lagos, wrote to Mrs Kekere-Ekun, inviting her for questioning unfailingly on Friday 15th April, 2016.
The letter referenced CR:3000/FCID/INT/ANNEX/VOL.38/277 stated: “This Bureau is conducting an undercover enquiry into a case of accusation of witchcraft in which there is a reasonable ground to invite you for a routine interview. You are requested to attend an interview with the Commissioner of Police at the address below…”
Sources confirmed that the police may soon declare the woman wanted and issue a warrant of arrest against her if she fails to appear for questioning.
