The Initiative for Transparency Strategy and Good Leadership, an advocacy group, has called for the prosecution of 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly over alleged perjury.
The group’s President General, Chizi Enyi made this demand in a petition addressed to Gov. Siminalayi Fubara, a copy obtained by our Correspondent in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Enyi accused the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, and 26 other pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers of allegedly lying under oath.
He warned that if the governor failed to take legal action against the lawmakers within seven days, the group would take Fubara and the state government to court.
“All the necessary documents detailing the commission of the crime – when, where, and the date – to enable you (Fubara) to prove your case beyond reasonable doubt are hereby attached,” he stated.
Enyi stressed that the people of Rivers could no longer remain passive while those entrusted with leadership positions continued to lie under oath.
He argued that the lawmakers’ actions had betrayed their positions of trust, violating the confidence placed in them by the electorate.
“We urge you (Fubara) to initiate criminal prosecution against Amaewhule and the 26 other legislators within seven days
“Failure to do so, we shall apply to the court for an order of mandamus to compel you to do so,” Enyi warned.
Freedomonline recalls that the embattled lawmakers were reportedly seen in viral videos defecting to the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) in December 2023.
They were also accused of swearing an affidavit at the Federal High Court in Abuja to confirm their defection from the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) to the APC.
However, the pro-Wike Assembly members have since denied leaving the PDP.
