The Women Arise for Change Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, has condemned abandonment of a three-day-old baby in a pit toilet in Otuocha community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The organisation also called for moral rebirth among the youth through introduction of moral ethics in schools.

The Chairman of the Initiative, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, made the condemnation in an interview on Tuesday in Enugu.

Ezekwueme, who thanked God for good-spirited Nigerians that picked the baby, described the act of the mother as wicked, devilish,  inhuman and barbaric.

“I call on the education  curriculum formulators to introduce,  without delay, moral ethics in schools,  as the society is degenerating into decadence and moral bankruptcy.

“It is an anathema, highly detestable and despicable that such impunity and iniquity took place in Anambra State dominated by Christians.

“This is a clear indication that all is not well; hence,  the inevitable need for all hands to be on deck to inculcate moral rectitude, discipline, respect for human dignity, sanctity and sacredness of human life among youths.

“It is disheartening and disgusting that an innocent baby died while receiving treatment at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka,” he said.

He praised the Wife of the state governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, and the state Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, for prompt  interventions.

The chairman called for immediate prosecution of the culprit to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Parents and guardians should monitor their daughters and female housemaids and properly counsel and guide them in case of unwanted pregnancies.

“All hands must be on deck to inculcate fear of God and moral rectitude in our youths and eradicate impunity and absurdity in the society,” he added.
