Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has increased the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from N10,000 to N20,000, representing a 100 per cent increase.

The 100 per cent increment is an immediate temporary measure to cushion the current hardship, pending a further review.

Aliyu announced the increment on Friday at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto, during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members posted to the state.

The governor also donated a brand new Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC to strengthen the scheme’s supervision activities, particularly in difficult terrains.

Additionally, Aliyu announced a donation of N30,000 to each corps member in the orientation camp, while directing the supply of five cows daily to support the corps members’ feeding throughout the orientation exercise.

While assuring that the state government had constituted a committee to review the allowances of corps members, the governor said the immediate increment was aimed at improving their welfare.

“I have formed a committee to review the state allowances of all corps members serving in Sokoto State, but for now, I have increased the allowance from N10,000 to N20,000 for all serving corps members.

“On the request of the state coordinator, I have donated a brand new Toyota Hilux to ease effective supervision.

“More so, for all the corps members presently in the camp, the government is donating N30,000 for each of you to reduce the burden of your daily needs in the camp,” Aliyu revealed.

The governor described the NYSC scheme as a tool for promoting national integration, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

He disclosed that the state government had spent more than N1 billion on the renovation and upgrading of the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area.

According to him, the project has reached about 90 per cent level of completion.

Aliyu assured corps members of his administration’s commitment to their security and welfare, urging employers, government agencies and ministries not to reject corps members posted to their establishments.

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Tyoyer Gabriel, commended the governor for his consistent support for the scheme and the welfare of corps members.

Gabriel expressed optimism that Aliyu would soon be recognised as the best NYSC-friendly governor, considering his sustained contributions to the scheme.

He also appreciated the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, for his fatherly support, particularly the provision of bulls for corps members during every orientation exercise and awards to the two best-performing corps members at each passing-out parade.

The coordinator further acknowledged the contributions of the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Man O’ War and other paramilitary agencies, and philanthropists, towards the success of the orientation camp.

Gabriel also disclosed that 2,100 corps members were deployed to the state, out of which 1,523 had so far been admitted, comprising 811 males and 712 females.

He added that the registration portal would remain open until Monday to accommodate additional corps members.

The Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Saidu Sifawa, represented by Justice Muhammad Sambo, administered the oath of allegiance to the corps members.
