Ottoh ‘Joe Boy’ Joseph, the winner of the N1 million Mojisola Ogunsanya Trophy for the Best Boxer of the 4th Gotv Boxing Night, has promised his fans he will perform better in future fights.
Joseph said after Sunday night’s fight at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos that his best had yet to come.
The boxer won the N1million prize-money after defeating Nurudeen ‘Prince’ Fatai in an electrifying National lightweight encounter.
Joseph won the match with a unanimous points decision after eight rounds.
“I am happy at the opportunity given to me to showcase my skills. I must commend the organisers for what they have done with the development of boxing in the country.
“My opponent did his best by fighting hard, and this stretched the fight longer than I expected, because I intended to beat him by technical knockout. He was a good boxer.
“But my speed and techniques were just too much for him to cope with. It was my speed that helped me in landing the telling punches and securing the all the points that gave me the fight,’’ Joseph said.
Meanwhile, Fatai acknowledged that Joseph was a skilful boxer.
“I lost the match to somebody I respect in boxing, even though I did my best. Joseph’s technique was better than mine.
“However, I will not give up because I know my stuff and I will just train hard and promise to impress my fans in next edition,’’ Fatai said.
The organiser of the match, Jenkins Alumona of Flykite promotions stated that the boxing night had recorded tremendous success.
He said that the next edition would be come up in December.
“We are happy about the continued success that we witnessed; we are encouraged about the level of competitiveness by the boxers.
“We believe that gradually we are reaching our ultimate goal.
“This edition has recorded five well-fought technical knockouts of the six scheduled bouts that gave the fans the kind of excitement they paid to watch.
“We are indeed motivated and confident of our progress so far,’’ he said.
Jamiu ‘Naval Man’ Olabode beat Pelumi ‘Hagler’ Sodubi in 58th minute of the second round to win the Welterweight Challenge.
Stanley ‘Edo Boy’ overwhelmed Isiaka ‘Easy Lion’ Yusuf in the 3rd round of their Lightwelter Weight Challenge.
The referee had to stop the fight following head injuries sustained by Yusuf in the 3rd round.
Olaide ‘Fijaborn’ Fijabi overpowered Saheed ‘Happy Boy’ Olayiwola in the 5th round of the National Lightweight Challenge.
The fight was stop over the inability of Olayiwola to respond to counts after receiving heavy punches from Fijabi. The referee had no choice than to call off the fight.
Waidi ‘Skoro’ Usman outpunched Taofik ‘Taozon’ Bisuga in the 5th round of their National featherweight challenge, which was scheduled to go over eight rounds.
In the International Super Middleweight Challenge, Isaac Ekpo of Nigeria beat Jules Kabore of Burkina Faso.
The referee had halted the match in the 5th round when he adjudged that the pounding was too much for Kabore to handle.
