Stakeholders in Kano have called on youths to develop entrepreneurial mindset and adopt the use of technology to become self-reliant.
They gave the advice at a creativity competition demonstration day, organized by Enthuse Entrepreneurship School to mark Global Entrepreneurship Week on Sunday in Kano.
The state Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Kofar-Mata, restated the state government’s commitment to uplifting quality of education.
He said that the state government budgeted 29 per cent to education sector more than what UNESCO approved.
Alhaji Mahe Bashir-Wali, the Wali of Kano, urged youths to engage in vocational skill learning, to make them self-reliant, rather than waiting for white-collar opportunities.
Wali urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to seek for opportunities to build their capacity and make a meaningful impact.
He also advised Nigerian youths to acquire entrepreneurial skills to enable them to overcome the prevailing economic recession.
An entrepreneur, Dr Gwani Faruk, said in spite of attending higher institutions where people acquired degrees and certificates, it was equally imperative for Nigerian youths to get additional knowledge in entrepreneurial skills.
The elder states man, added that Nigeria, with its high youth population, had the potential to become great if the youth could embrace entrepreneurial skills.
Also, Prof. Murtala Sagagi, Director General, Dangote Business School, Kano, said that no nation could develop without technology.
“It is also important for young people to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, let them have this Nigeria of their dreams,” he advised.
He also called on youths to enroll into skill acquisition training, to further expand their frontiers of knowledge.
Mr Michael Banda, Senior Education Manager, United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Kano Field Office, urged students to be innovative and come up with new ideas.
Banda also advised the young learners, who demonstrated various innovations, to present new valuable ideas that would be marketable.
“I urged you to be innovative and find new and better ways that will enable you to compete and thrive in today’s world,” he explained.
Alhaji Khalifa Dankade, the organizer and proprietor of the school, said it was the first entrepreneurship secondary school in Nigeria.
According to him, the school is designed to be Nigeria’s nest and heart of creation and innovations.
“We envisioned a leading-edge learning environment that purposefully and skillfully nurtures academic excellence, entrepreneur mindset, and leadership capabilities in young learners,” he said.
Dankade further said that Enthuse Creativity Competition was an annual innovation challenge that gave the students a unique opportunity to acquire and nurture problem-solving skills.
