After three weeks of temporary break, the 2014/2015 Globacom Premier League resumed on June 14, with a whopping 25 goals scored in the Week 11 matches played across venues nationwide.
One of the star matches played recorded a goal feast of sorts as the Heartland FC of Owerri defeated Bayelsa United, 4-1 at home.
The match re-kindled the hopes of the team in winning more matches in the competition, as they were currently placed ninth on the log.
Another team was Giwa of Jos, who are currently topping the chat with 20 points. They defeated, the former Gabros, now officially renamed Ifeanyi Ubah FC of Nnewi, in an away encounter that they won 2-0.
The second placed Sunshine Stars of Akure, lost an away match to Abia Warriors, 3-2 while in a local derby in Port Harcourt, Dolphins drew 1-1 with Sharks.
The El Kanemi Warriors of Borno, whose homestead was being threaten by insurgency but playing its home matches in Kano, defeated FC Taraba, 2-1 in Kano.
The re-building Shooting Stars of Ibadan (3SC) of Ibadan won at home, defeating visiting Lobi of Makurdi 3-0. It was indeed, a good welcome for the newly-engaged Head Coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, who had just left Dolphins of Port Harcourt.
In Nasarawa, the home team, the Nasarawa United, defeated visiting Akwa United, 1-0 in Lafia, while one of the returnees to the premier league, Kwara United outclassed Enugu Rangers, 3-1, in Ilorin.
Harry Iwuala, an official of the League Management Company (LMC), said the goals were quite impressive.
“This is just the restarting of the league after three weeks of temporary stopage; we welcome the goal feast. We really expected that it will be so.
“However, the numbers of goals scored in the league does not determine if a league is vibrant or not, it only helps to provide excitement fans, as well as an added colour to the game.
“Sometimes the defenders can hold the strikers from scoring goals and yet the league will still be spectacular. We like the goals as it adds to the excitement that fans derive from following their teams,’’ Iwuala said.
The LMC had reaffirmed that the 2014/2015 league season would continue with the Week 11 matches after a joint meeting with the club owners in Abuja on June 9.
The premier league body, however, said the match involving Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars scheduled for Warri on June 14 had to be postponed indefinitely, because the `Seasiders’ as the Wolves are known had eight of their players in the Super Eagles and the U-23 team.
The players were in the National teams that defeated Chad 2-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and the Africa Games qualifier for the soccer event.
Ogunbote, one the coaches in the league hailed the ongoing league as good but added, there was still room for improvements.
The coach, whose team, the 3SC 3-0 defeated Lobi of Makurdi in their match at Ibadan, said he was so impressed so far at the progress made in the league.
