The Glo-sponsored CNN African Voices will this week celebrate three outstanding car buffs from Africa – Stacey Lee May from South Africa, Amirah Alladeen of Mauritius, and Ghana’s Fred Apaloo.
The 30-minute magazine programme will showcase their activities such as spinning, racing and collection of antique wheels.
Stacey Lee May was trained in the art by her father with her mother’s full support. She took solace in car spinning and drifting on cars which she saw as a way of telling her bullies in school that she could accomplish anything she wanted to do.
May, who has established a reputation for herself in South Africa and across the continent, is very popular for often hanging out of or jumping out of a muscle car while spinning “donuts” in front of an astonished audience.
She is generally known as ‘queen of spinning’ in her hometown and has successfully raised her family and her South African nation’s profile through the dangerous art of spinning.
The second guest, Ghana-born Apaloo is a car freak. Over the years, he has successfully revived antique wheels and has a collection of over 20 cars, including ancient British, German and other classy models.
Amirah is the third guest. With her father, Rayhan Alladeen’s backing, she has successfully dominated the rally racing circuit. She got her passion for car rally from her father and together they created a record as the fastest overall racer during the last stage of the Mauritius National Rally Championship for 2018.
The story of Stacey, Apaloo and Amirah is an inspiration to young people across the continent of Africa.
