The Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) has presented Adamawa Climate Risk Register to the state government with a view to addressing climate challenges in the state.

Speaking during the presentation of the register on Tuesday in Yola, Mr Joseph Ibrahim, GIFSEP’s Program Officer, said the exercise started six weeks ago with the training of community activists and Civil Society Organizations(CSOs).

According to him, the exercise is being supported by OXFAM in Nigeria as part of Africa Activities for Climate Justice Project.

He said that after the training, the activists and the CSOs would be deployed across the 21 Local councils to develop local and state risk register.

“The process has lead us to know and develop Local Government risk register and state risk register.

“Today, we are here consolidated on all the data and information gotten across the state.

“We are hoping this will be a tool that will help government in climate change intervention in the state,’’ he said.

He said that the register would be related to development partners across the country for intervention.

Ibrahim called on the participants in the workshop to remain climate change ambassadors and to step down the knowledge acquired in their respective communities.

He further listed some of the key findings to include flooding, heat wave, dry spell, windstorm, erosion and pests outbreak.

On his part, the Executive Director, Adamawa Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Ibrahim Umar, commended GIFSEP for using Adamawa as a pilot state.

He promised that the state would judiciously use the risk register for intervention in the affected communities.

According to him, government is doing everything possible to address the effects of climate change in the state and always ready to work with development partners in that direction.
