Major General Hassan Ahmed was, on Thursday night, shot dead along Lokoja-Abuja highway.
He was returning from Okene, Kogi State to Abuja.
The killing occurred close to Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The former Provost Marshal was recently appointed as a Director at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
His sister, Safina Ahmed, who was in the car with him, was kidnapped by the gunmen. His injured driver, Sergeant Bukar, is already receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Nigerian Army has confirmed the murder.
Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, announced the death in a statement.
Nwachukwu said the incident happened when the top officer’s vehicle was “attacked by gunmen while transiting along Lokoja – Abuja”.
He revealed that an Army delegation, led by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Major General Anthony Omozoje, has visited the widow and other members of the bereaved family.
Members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), led by the Deputy National President, Stella Omozoje, have also paid a condolence visit.
“The remains of the deceased senior officer will be accorded a befitting burial at the Lungi Barracks Cemetery on Friday by 10 a.m.”, the statement added.
Nwachukwu conveyed the sympathies of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Farouk Yahaya, officers and men of the military to the family.
