The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Tuesday at the age of 100.
Iba Adams said Fasoranti’s death marked the end of an era in Yoruba leadership and Nigerian socio-political history.
He described Pa Fasoranti as a towering figure who stood for integrity, discipline, and selfless service to the Yoruba people and Nigeria.
“We have lost a leader whose wisdom and principled stance on issues of justice, true federalism and good governance had been a guiding light for generations.
“Pa Fasoranti’s contributions to Yorubaland were immense and multifaceted. As the leader of Afenifere, he championed the cause of Yoruba unity and cultural pride while advocating for the protection of Yoruba interests within the Nigerian federation.
“His leadership was marked by a commitment to democratic values and the pursuit of justice, which earned him respect not only among the Yoruba but across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic landscape,” Adams said.
The Aare Ona Kakanfo recounted how Pa Fasoranti played a pivotal role in shaping the socio-political discourse in Nigeria, noting that he was a staunch advocate for true federalism who believed that Nigeria’s unity could only be sustained through equitable power-sharing and respect for the autonomy of its constituent regions.
He recalled that the deceased’s efforts helped to keep alive the ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive vision for Nigeria, emphasising education, social justice, and economic development.
The Aare Ona Kakanfo also highlighted Pa Fasoranti’s unwavering dedication to national unity despite his strong advocacy for Yoruba rights.
He noted that Pa Fasoranti’s leadership style was inclusive and conciliatory, always seeking dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts, an approach he said contributed significantly to maintaining peace and stability in Yorubaland and Nigeria during turbulent times.
While he prayed for the repose of his soul, Iba Adams said the late leader’s legacy would endure through the many lives he touched and the principles he upheld.
Iba Gani Adams also said that Yorubaland and indeed Nigeria lost a distinguished leader in Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, who passed away on Monday, aged 71.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the Uduaghan family, the people of Delta State, and the entire South-South region
He said the former Governor of Delta State and a proud son of the Itsekiri, was a politician of note who contributed immensely to Delta State, the South-South region, and Nigeria at large.
In a statement, Adams described him as a politician of repute and a dedicated public servant, noting that his tenure as the Governor of Delta State from 2007 to 2015 was marked by significant strides in infrastructural development, healthcare improvement, and economic growth.
“As a medical doctor turned politician, Uduaghan brought a unique perspective to governance, prioritising the welfare of his people and the advancement of the region.
“Besides, he was a visionary leader whose legacy transcends ethnic and regional boundaries. He was not only a son of the Itsekiri nation but a true Nigerian patriot whose service to Delta State and the South-South region will forever be remembered,” Adams stated.
The Aare Ona Kakanfo also emphasised the importance of Uduaghan’s role in national politics. He noted that his ability to navigate complex political landscapes earned him respect across party lines and among diverse ethnic groups.
Reflecting on the legacy left behind, Iba Adams remarked: “The foundation Chief Uduaghan laid in Delta State and the South-South region gives hope for future generations. His leadership style, grounded in service and humility, will continue to inspire leaders across Nigeria. We mourn his loss deeply, but we celebrate a life well-lived in the service of the people”.
