The price of a litre of petrol hit N200 on Thursday in Iseyin, Oyo State, following the scarcity of the product in the area.
All the filing stations in the town closed their premises against the public as officials claimed they had no products.
It was, however, noticed that some attendants sold to some motorists through the back door at N200 per litre.
A motorist said that he bought the product at N150 on Wednesday but that it had increased by N50.
“If you go now, they will tell you there is no fuel, but if you beg them, they will tell you to come through the back door and sell for you at N200 per litre.
“I bought it yesterday and I have bought again today because I operate a business centre; there is no electricity and I don’t want my customers to go elsewhere for their services.
“The situation is that bad, I want to appeal to relevant authorities to make fuel available and it’s gradually becoming parts of our daily lives.
“The situation is very bad in this country and I don’t know why we can’t develop a lasting solution. Government after government make promises but to no avail,’’ he said.
A middle aged lady, who also preferred anonymity, confirmed the claim of the motorists, saying she had also purchased at N200 in the early hours.
“I was at the filing station very early because one of the attendants lives close to my house and he asked me to come early.
“I never knew I was going to pay that much for a litre, but what can we do since the government is making our lives difficult.
“I know some people in government have conscience too and they have relatives too, they should please help the masses. We have enough worries already,’’ she said.
