Nine governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed the suspension of Iliya Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman, appointing Alhaji Ahmed Yayari, the current PDP Treasurer, as the new Acting National Chairman.

This decision, taken during a virtual meeting held on October 12, 2024, signals a collective effort by the party’s leadership to ensure unity and internal cohesion.
One of the governors revealed that Damagum’s suspension was aimed at addressing critical internal issues and reinforcing the party’s focus on its core values and national strategy.

The meeting of the governors, it was learned, was driven by the desire to strengthen the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. They reiterated their commitment to upholding the party’s constitution and ensuring internal disputes are resolved amicably and within the framework of party rules.

Attendees of the meeting included:

1. Governor Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers State)

2. Governor Douye Diri (Bayelsa State)

3. Governor Godwin Obaseki (Edo State)

4. Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori (Delta State)

5. Governor Agbu Kefas (Taraba State)

6. Governor Dauda Lawal (Zamfara State)

7. Governor Peter Mbah (Enugu State)

8. Governor Ademola Adeleke (Osun State)

9. Governor Pastor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom State)

Key Resolutions from the Meeting:

1. Unanimous endorsement of the suspension of Iliya Damagum as Acting National Chairman.

2. Appointment of Alhaji Ahmed Yayari, the PDP’s National Treasurer, as the new Acting National Chairman.

3. Reaffirmation of their commitment to the party’s constitution and internal democratic principles.

4. Resolution to handle any internal conflicts through the established channels and promote party unity.

This decision comes amid growing calls within the party for stronger leadership to navigate challenges and unify its diverse factions. The governors emphasised that their priority remains building a stronger PDP, capable of delivering on its mandate to the Nigerian people.
