France confirms first Ebola case in current outbreak after doctor returns from Congo

France has recorded its first case of Ebola virus disease in the current outbreak after a medical doctor returning from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) tested positive for the virus.

The French Health Ministry confirmed the case on Wednesday, stating that the patient has been placed in isolation and contact tracing has begun.

Authorities also said the risk of wider transmission within France and Europe remains low.

According to the ministry, the infected doctor had recently returned from an assignment in Congo, where an ongoing Ebola outbreak is being monitored.

Health officials have activated emergency containment protocols, including isolation measures and monitoring of individuals who may have been exposed.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC has been linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain, according to health authorities.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that the outbreak has already caused more than 1,000 infections and 267 deaths, making it one of the fastest-spreading Ebola episodes in its early phase.

Experts believe the virus may have circulated undetected for months before the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, 2026.

Health officials said initial confirmed cases were recorded in urban centres, with infections now reported in at least three densely populated displacement camps.

This development has raised concerns about transmission in high-density humanitarian settings

The current outbreak comes years after major Ebola crises in West Africa (2014–2016) and the DRC (2018), which collectively caused thousands of deaths.

Earlier this month, a U.S. citizen treated for Ebola in Germany was discharged after recovering fully, with no detectable virus since late May.
