First Bank Nigeria Ltd (FirstBank) says it will on September 3 host the inaugural public lecture of its Samuel Asabia Professorial Chair in Business Ethics and Governance at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

This is according to a statement by the bank in Lagos on Wednesday.

The lecture has the theme: “Business Ethics and the Future of Nigeria’s Economy”.

The lecture will bring together academics, business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs and students to examine the role of ethical leadership in Nigeria’s economic development.

The bank said the lecture would focus on integrity, accountability, sustainability, corporate governance and responsible leadership as key drivers of long-term economic growth.

It said the Samuel Asabia Professorial Chair was established in honour of Samuel Asabia, the bank’s first indigenous Managing Director.

According to FirstBank, the Chair provides a platform for research, teaching and thought leadership in business ethics, corporate governance, responsible leadership and sustainable business practices.

FirstBank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Olusegun Alebiosu, will chair the inaugural lecture.

Alebiosu said sustainable economic progress depended on ethical leadership, strong governance and responsible enterprise.

He said the initiative would promote dialogue on how integrity driven leadership could strengthen institutions, improve economic resilience and support a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.

“We believe that sustainable economic progress is anchored on ethical leadership, strong governance and responsible enterprise,” he said.

Alebiosu said FirstBank remained committed to supporting platforms that promoted knowledge exchange, nation building and responsible leadership.

He said the initiative reflected the bank’s belief that sustainable development goes beyond financial performance to include ethical decision making, responsible corporate citizenship and leadership development.

The Samuel Asabia Professorial Chair is currently occupied by Prof. Kenneth Amaeshi, an internationally recognised scholar whose work covers sustainable finance, corporate governance, business ethics and economic development.

FirstBank said its investments in education, research and thought leadership were aimed at supporting the development of institutions and leadership principles needed for a more ethical and sustainable Nigeria.
