*Pharaohs bungle two-goal lead to bow 3-2 to defending champions

Egypt’s inspiring 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a painful end in the Round of 16 as the Pharaohs fell 3-2 to defending champions, Argentina, in a match that will be remembered as much for its controversial officiating as for the football itself.

Egypt looked poised to produce one of the best upsets of the tournament after taking the game to the South American giants, scoring early through Yasser Ibrahim before adding what appeared to be a clear goal that would eventually be disallowed after VAR review.

Although the attack continued and Egypt still found the net, several contentious decisions throughout the match left players and supporters questioning the outcome.
Egypt remained the better side for long stretches, only to see Argentina seize control during a relentless second-half spell. The equalizer came amid what many believed was a potential offside situation as Messi found the back of the net. A late defensive lapse by Egypt would then allow Argentina to complete the comeback and secure passage to the quarterfinals.

For Egypt, the defeat will leave a lingering sense of what might have been. The Pharaohs matched—and at times outplayed—the reigning world champions with courage, organisation, and attacking intent, yet the final result told a different story.
For many supporters, the officiating decisions will remain a major talking point long after the final whistle.

If this indeed proves to be Mohamed Salah’s final FIFA World Cup appearance, then it marks the end of an extraordinary chapter for one of Africa’s greatest footballers.
Regardless of the result, Salah’s leadership, professionalism and contribution to Egyptian and African football have inspired an entire generation, and many will feel that both he and the Pharaohs deserved more from a performance that showcased their quality on the world’s biggest stage.

Argentina will face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarter-finals.
