fifa_logoWorld football governing body FIFA on Wednesday unveiled the official emblem of the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup at the Wellington Regional Stadium in New Zealand.

FIFA said on its website that the design of the logo portrayed the unique culture and natural beauty of New Zealand, the competition’s host country.

The 20th edition of the U-20 World Cup will hold in seven New Zealand cities from May 30 to June 20, 2015.

The host cities are Whangerei, Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The statement added that the design of the logo was based on the shape of the FIFA U-20 World Cup trophy.

“Other elements of the design include the iconic unfurling “pico” or young fern, representing the youthful nature of those participating in the tournament.

“It also represents the potential greatness of the players who will be aiming to amaze fans with their skills and talent,’’ it said.

The statement quoted the Chief Executive Officer of the tournament, Dave Beeche, as saying it was a world class design.

“FIFA has captured all that is unique and special about New Zealand. It is a truly world-class design.

“It is only fitting for FIFA’s second-largest football tournament, an event which we are hugely proud to be hosting.

“With only 23 nations out of 209 qualifying for a place at this tournament, every team competing will provide some of the best football we will ever see in this country.

“Their performance will be a real treat for all sports fans, young and old,’’ the statement said.

The host nation will kick off the tournament with the opening ceremony at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium on May 30, 2015.

The opening ceremony will be followed by the first of 52 matches to be played in the space of three weeks of the tournament.
