The Federal Government of Nigeria has shut down three manufacturing companies in Ogijo, Ogun State, over serious workplace safety violations.
The enforcement action was carried out on Wednesday by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment Mrs Nkeiruka Onyejeocha during an inspection focused on occupational health and safety compliance.
The affected companies include African Refractory and Allied Products (ARAP)African Non-Ferrous Industries Ltd., and Metalworld Recycling Ltd. Meanwhile, Vedanta Metal Industries Ltd.was issued a warning and directed to improve its housekeeping standards.
Speaking during the operation, Onyejeocha said the decision followed repeated failures by the companies to address safety concerns despite prior warnings issued in December 2025.
She revealed that the factories had been formally notified about violations, including lack of hazard training and failure to provide adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for workers.
According to the minister, the companies ignored official directives and failed to take corrective measures, putting workers’ lives at risk.
She expressed concern over reported incidents linked to the factories, stating that several deaths had been associated with unsafe practices, many of which were not properly documented.
Onyejeocha emphasised that enforcement actions would be taken in line with existing labour and safety laws, adding that the affected firms would face sanctions.
The minister also reiterated that factory operators must comply with regulatory procedures, especially when modifying production processes or upgrading facilities.
She noted that such changes require official approval and certification to ensure they meet national safety standards.
While acknowledging the importance of industrial growth, Onyejeocha stressed that protecting human lives must remain a top priority.
She urged companies across Nigeria to adhere strictly to occupational safety regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
