Turkish giants Fenerbahce have announced the signing of Spartak Moscow forward Emmanuel Emenike for €13million, amid interest from West Ham United.
It is reported that the Nigerian international will undergo a medical with the Istanbul giants on Thursday before signing a long-term contract (expected to be four or five years).
The 26 year-old left the Turkish side back in 2011 for Spartak due to the club’s match fixing scandal. Emenike left the side without playing a single game but they were still keen in re-signing him after impressing during his brief spell at the club.
Emenike is now viewed as a prolific goal scorer due to his impressive goal scoring record of 21 goals in his two year spell at the club (playing 42 times).
The main issue with the capture is that Turkish clubs are only allowed 10 foreign players maximum every season, but with his arrival, Fenerbahce will have 11 foreign players under contract at the club – so this issue will have to be resolved swiftly or they will be in trouble once again.
Remarkably, back in 2011 when the Turkish side bought the striker for €9million, Emenike was arrested over match-fixing allegations. He was questions and then released due to a lack of evidence.
Five months later, Emenike (who had then been transfer listed) and thirteen other players were charged over match fixing attempts. If he was convicted of a charge by Turkish court then he would be sentenced to three years in prison.
Emenike was then acquitted of match fixing in April 2013.
The whole process did not make too much sense as Emenike did not actually play a game yet was still questioned.
