Fashola to voters: Record election process with mobile phones

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has urged voters in the Centre of Excellence to stay at polling booths after voting and record the process through their phones and ipads.
To him, the‎ order of the Inspector General of Police, Sulaiman Abba, that voters should leave polling units after casting their votes, “is an attempt to rig and manipulate election results from the polling units”.
Fashola spoke in Somolu during the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign.
He said: “According to the constitution, electorate could wait at the polling units as long as they did not foment trouble. Election is governed by law and those who said you should stay away from the polling units are reading the Electoral Act wrongly. There is nothing that stops you from staying at the polling units after casting your vote.
“The first thing you do is to wash your hands before leaving home so that the card readers can recognise your finger print. Also on that day, dress well and call others to cast their vote.
Immediately you get to the polling unit and they have accredited you, don’t campaign for vote at the polling units; it is illegal. Cast your vote and stay where you can see how the voting process is going on. It is not only the political parties that have interest in the election process. Citizens who aren’t affiliated to any of the political parties also have interest in the outcome of the polls.
“Asking the electorate to stay 300 meters away from the polling units is like asking one to stay away from the polling units three times the length of a football field. And one cannot see whatever is happening. Those who said that planned to rig the election.
“Don’t fight with anyone at the polling units. The electoral act says that once the voting is completed in each of the polling units, the electoral officer must count the vote and announce the result to the residents”.
The APC governorship candidate, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, and the lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Gbenga Ashafa, also spoke in the same vein, urging voters to stay at the polling units to observe the electioneering process.
