Human Rights Lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN has requested the police to investigate the story published by Kemi Olunloyo to the effect that the late Dowen College school boy, Sylvester Omoroni, suffered injuries, which led to his death while being initiated to join a cult.
Falana, SAN, who is the Attorney to the family of the late Sylvester Omoroni, petitioned the Nigeria Police Force, Panti, Yaba, Lagos to carry out a thorough investigation into Olunloyo’s allegations to unravel the truth.
According to the law firm, Olunloyo’s story contradicts claims by the Oromonis that Sylvester was bullied by five senior students who wanted him to forcefully join their cult.
In her recorded video circulated on social media, Olunloyo claimed that her own investigations revealed that it was in course of joining the cult that he was beaten and given engine oil to drink.
The petition written and signed by Taiwo E. Olawanle on behalf of Falana & Falana Chambers and addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, Lagos State Police Command, Panti, Yaba, urged the police to investigate Olunloyo’s claim, maintaining that her claim was aimed at misleading the police in their investigation.
To this end, the law firm is requesting for the Prosecution of Olunloyo “for making false allegations capable of diverting police investigations into the case.”
The letter reads:
REQUEST FOR INVESTIGATION OF THE ALLEGATION MADE BY MS KEMI OLUNLOYO ON THE TRAGIC DEATH OF SYLVESTER OROMONI AT DOWEN COLLEGE, LEKKI, LAGOS
“We remain Solicitors to the family of the late Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State who recently died from the injuries sustained during a violent attack by some students.
“Although the students and staff of the College suspected to have played a role in the brutal murder of Sylvester Oromini have made useful statements to the Police. One Ms Kemi Olunloyo has just introduced another twist to the incident. According to a false statement credited to her, Ms Olunloyo claimed that “Sylvester Oromoni wanted to join the cult, he agreed to be beaten and drank Engine oil as part of the initiation process.”
“Ms Olunloyo recorded her false statement and has been circulating same on social media in a wicked manner with the sole purpose of diverting attention from the ongoing investigation by the Police. Apart from attempting to destroy the name of Sylvester Oromoni, Ms Olunloyo has exacerbated the tragedy of his parents, family members and friends without any justification whatsoever.
“Even though the reckless statement is a figment of the imagination of Ms Olunloyo, we are of the strong view that she ought to assist the Police in the ongoing investigation into the cause of the death of Sylvester Oromoni. We are therefore compelled to request the Police to investigate the allegation of false information being circulated by Ms Olunloyo on the gruesome circumstances surrounding the death of Sylvester Oromoni. If she cannot substantiate her reckless allegation, Ms Olunloyo ought to be charged with false information in the Magistrate Court in Lagos State.
“While we hope that our request will be granted, please accept the warm regards of our principal, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN“.
