Dr. Hauwa Kwanda, a resident doctor at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has advised residents to maintain regular water intake to protect against the health risks associated with the ongoing heatwave in Nigeria.

Speaking to our correspondence in Potiskum on Thursday, Dr. Kwanda stressed that staying hydrated is crucial, even when individuals do not feel thirsty. “It is important to drink enough water throughout the day, especially during a heatwave,” she emphasized.

She further recommended wearing lightweight, bright, and loose-fitting clothing, as well as using accessories like umbrellas, caps, and sunglasses to protect oneself from the harsh sun when outdoors.

Dr. Kwanda warned of the dangers of prolonged exposure to extreme heat, which can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and sunburn. She urged residents to take preventive measures and be vigilant about the potential risks posed by extreme weather conditions.

While awareness of heat-related health risks has increased, Dr. Kwanda called for more public education to ensure that people fully understand the life-threatening consequences of inadequate protection from the sun. She recommended enhanced awareness through various media platforms, including radio, television, social media, schools, mosques, churches, and community gatherings.

“People need to understand that extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken,” she added.

In addition to hydration, Dr. Kwanda advised people to consume more fruits and vegetables, which can help in staying hydrated and replenishing lost nutrients. She also stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms like severe weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting, or collapse occur due to heat exposure.

Furthermore, she recommended drinking room-temperature water rather than excessively cold water, which can lead to other health complications.
