EPL: Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-1 to keep heat on City + other results

Manchester United held on with 10 men after Paul Pogba’s late dismissal to beat Arsenal 3-1 in a pulsating game at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
It was on a day when Liverpool and Chelsea also kept up the heat on English Premier League (EPL) leaders, Manchester City.
With Pep Guardiola’s free-flowing side not in action until Sunday, second-placed United closed the gap at the top to five points.
But it was with a thrilling display which belied manager Jose Mourinho’s reputation as overly defensive away from home.
Goals from Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard inside 11 minutes, and a further second-half strike from Lingard, showed United at their best.
However, Pogba’s crude ‘studs-up’ lunge at Hector Bellerin revealed another side in the 75th minute.
The Frenchman deservedly received a straight red card and will miss three games, including next week’s derby against City.
Until Pogba’s dismissal, everything had looked perfect for United, for whom David De Gea was outstanding and was beaten only by Alexandre Lacazette just after the interval.
“What I saw today was the best goalkeeper in the world,” said Mourinho, who said he “did not know” what to make of Pogba’s dismissal and would leave it to the television pundits to decide.
Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino scored twice as Liverpool made it five wins from their last six Premier League games with a 5-1 drubbing of Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
In spite of making six changes to the Liverpool starting line-up, Juergen Klopp’s side started the game strongly and enjoyed 74 percent of possession in the opening half an hour.
They were rewarded when Philippe Coutinho’s corner kick picked out Emre Can.
He rose above two Brighton defenders and headed the ball past Mathew Ryan for his first Premier League goal of the season to enliven the Amex Stadium.
The Brighton defence went to sleep and conceded a second just over a minute later.
This was when Coutinho turned provider once again and played the perfect ball into Firmino who made no mistake by striking the ball past Ryan.
Glenn Murray blew a golden chance to get his side back into the game just after halftime when Simon Mignolet produced a superb save to deny the Brighton forward.
Liverpool raced down the other end and Mohamed Salah’s ball picked out Firmino who made no mistake with another clinical finish.
Murray pulled a goal back for Brighton from the penalty spot after Jordan Henderson was adjudged to have pushed Shane Duffy, but Liverpool scored two late goals.
Coutinho netted a clever low free kick and Lewis Dunk headed the ball past his own goalkeeper to complete the rout.
In other English Premier League matches played on Saturday, hosts Everton beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 while Leicester City beat visiting Burnley 1-0.
Tottenham also held hosts Watford 1-1, while hosts Stoke City beat Swansea 2-1 and West Brom drew goalless with visiting Crystal Palace.
Two goals from Eden Hazard and one by Alvaro Morata earned Chelsea FC a workmanlike 3-1 English Premier League victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Dwight Gayle gave Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side a surprise lead in the opening minutes to set the tone.
He blasted his shot home in the 12th minute after Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois had dived at the feet of the advancing Jacob Murphy.
But Chelsea, third in the table, quickly fought back, earning two corner kicks and hitting the post.
Hazard then got on the end of a ball parried by defender Florian Lejeune in the 21st minute.
Spain striker Morata’s simple header from a Victor Moses cross, his 10th in all competitions this season, made it 2-1 for the home side at halftime.
Hazard scored his eighth of the campaign from the penalty kick spot after Matt Ritchie brought down Moses.
“We must be pleased, we started a bit slowly and when we went 1-0 we started to play with intensity and had chances to score,” Chelsea manager Antonio Conte told reporters.
“It was a good performance from all my players. It was very important to take three points and we did this.”
Conte praised the contribution of Belgian Hazard.
“He played a really good game,” the Italian said. “He enjoyed it a lot to play this type of football.
“Eden is an important player. With him we change our system. He can play as second striker or as number 10.”
