Enugu State workers under the auspices of the Amalgamated Union of Public Service Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Service have appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to treat its members equally with their counterparts in the ministries, urging the government to extend the payment of the N30,000 minimum wage to them.
Members of the group, who paid a courtesy visit on Ugwuanyi in the Government House on Tuesday, also appealed to the state government to pay the arrears of salaries owed them over the years.
Leader of the group, Mr Timothy Ojielo, narrated their ordeal to Ugwuanyi who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo.
He said that they had written series of letters to the state government to that effect.
”We are here on what our members described as dichotomy due to the much attention given to other sister staff.
“It is unbelievable for us to start mentioning that up till now, our members since the approval of the payment of N30,000 minimum wage are yet to receive it.
”So we ask, if we are not part of the system and why are we relegated? ” he asked.
Ojielo said that their members were being relegated to the background despite their efforts in serving the state.
” Ministries receive their salaries and ours do come weeks after and that is why we are asking, what went wrong? ”
“Our members are not being promoted in line with others and Enugu Rural Water Sanitation Agency ENRUWASA workers, Enugu Transport Company workers, Water Corporation, Civil and others are being marginalised,” he lamented.
”As I am talking to you now, workers of ENRUWASA on grade level one to seven are being paid N20,000 and level eight and above are being paid N22,000, ” Ojielo said.
He called on the state government to look into their problems and alleviate their sufferings.
Responding, Mrs Ezeilo thanked the group for coming and promised that she would relay their message to Ugwuanyi.
She urged them to exercise patience as the government will judiciously look into all their issues.
