The Ekiti House of Assembly, on Thursday, impeached its Deputy Speaker Mr Adesegun Adewumi for alleged gross misconduct.

The House, at its plenary, also removed its Chief Whip, Mr Akinniyi Sunday.

Mr Adesegun Adewumi was removed as deputy speaker after a motion moved by the House Leader of Business, Mr Akinyele Olatunji and seconded by Mr Olayanju Olanrewaju.

Akinyele alleged that Adewumi was found to have indulged in activities capable of bringing the dignity and integrity of the House to disrepute.

He listed the allegations against the impeached deputy speaker to include: a gross misconduct; lack of leadership quality and conducting himself in a way that could destabilise the state.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Kola Oluwawole, said that 18 members of the Assembly signed the notice of impeachment of the deputy speaker in accordance with Section 92 (2c) of the 1999 constitution, as amended.

Members present at the plenary unanimously agreed that Adewumi had exhibited a high level of disloyalty and unpatriotism and as such, should be impeached.

Mr Adesina Animasaun, representing Ekiti West Constituency II, was elected as deputy speaker to replace Adewumi while Mr Onigiobi Olawale, representing Ekiti South West constituency I, became the new Chief Whip.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Dr Samuel Omotoso, nominated Animasaun, the nomination, which was seconded by Mr Afolabi Akanni.

In his acceptance speech, the new deputy speaker, Animasaun said he was honoured by the appointment and promised to perform his duties according to the constitution.
