EFCC ensures proper investigation before arresting suspects, says Magu

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, said the agency would continue to ensure that proper investigation was carried out before arresting and detaining suspects in its facilities.

Magu said this while taking journalists on an inspection tour of the commission`s facilities on Thursday in Abuja.

The tour was organised by the EFCC to debunk reports in a section of the media that the commission tortures those in its custody.

Magu said it has no reason to torture those in its detention facilities as was being speculated.

He said that the tour had become necessary to correct public negative perception of the commission and its operations, especially with regards to how those in its custody were being treated.

Magu further added that contrary to public perception, the commission would not pick on any person until proper investigation and background check were carried out.

“We do not torture people as is being speculated, we do proper check on people before inviting them over,’’ he said.

Magu said that though the commission might not be perfect, its detention facilities “are the best in the country and stand out when compared to other such facilities in most West African countries”.

He said the commission was, however, striving towards perfection, adding that it was working in the interest of the country and its people.

He said the commission was open to constructive criticism, which would help it to make necessary corrections where necessary.
Journalists were taken round the commission`s detention centre, medical laboratory and clinic.

Some of those in the detention centre said that they were not being treated badly.
