Edo Assembly passes bill to amend Sickle Cell Centre law

The Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the bill for a law to amend the provisions for the establishment of Edo State Sickle Cell Centre Law 2005.
The Majority Leader of the House, Foly Ogedengbe (APC -Owan East), moved the motion for the House to resolve into the committee of the whole, to consider the bill.
Mrs Elizabeth Ativie, (APC- Uhunmwode), seconded the motion.
Considering the bill at the committee of the whole, the Speaker, Justin Okonoboh, said the law shall now be known as the Edo State Sickle Cell Centre Law 2017.
Okonoboh said the new law provided that the centre should now operate 24 hours services to enable patients to access comprehensive and affordable health care services.
He said the centre would be headed by a Chief Medical Director instead of an administrative secretary.
The speaker, thereafter, directed that clean copies of the bill be sent to the governor for his accent.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Sickle Cell Centre was established in 1993 by the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun administration and inaugurated by former military President, Ibrahim Babangida.
