The Immediate Past Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi, Charles Akpu Enika, has hailed the standard exhibited at the ongoing Ebonyi Governor’s cup competition.
Enika made the assertion on Wednesday while speaking on the competition involving the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The former commissioner said that the array of talents discovered so far shows that football talents abound across the state.
“We have seen young footballers who are hungry for stardom and are looking for springboards to achieve their dreams.
“We are optimistic that these talents would be assembled and groomed adequately by relevant sporting authorities in the state.
“They should also serve as the bedrock of the state’s football team which the governor has pledged to float,” he said.
He commended Gov. Francis Nwifuru for approving the organisation of the competition, noting that it has achieved its aim of identifying hidden talents in the state.
“The governor has so far showed his readiness to fulfil his campaign manifesto of giving sports its deserved place in the state.
“The enthusiasm shown by the players, officials, organizers and leadership of the councils, offers solid hope of sporting successes for the state,” he said.
He also commended the present Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, for astutely ensuring the success of the competition.
“The commissioner has been visible at the stadium, ensuring that the competition’s rules are followed strictly and complaints resolved.
“This attribute has been emulated by the organizers in ensuring overall success of the competition,” he said.
The final of the competition will be played on Sept. 10 between Ebonyi and Ishielu Local Government Areas.
