The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has described the late Managing Editor and Chief Executive Officer, Eagle Online newspaper, Dotun Oladipo, as a beacon of integrity, professionalism and dedication in a field that demands courage and commitment.
He said his sudden death was a blow to all who value truthful and ethical journalism.
In a statement on Thursday, Iba Adams expressed profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the late Oladipo’s family, his friends, and the Nigerian journalism community.
Iba extended sympathies to the family of the late publisher, the management and staff of Eagle Online, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), and the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE).
The Aare Ona Kakanfo said Oladipo’s death sent waves of grief across Nigeria’s journalism community, and left many mourning the loss of a rare gem whose contributions to the media landscape were both significant and enduring.
He emphasised that Oladipo’s departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt by the NUJ, GOCOP, and the broader media fraternity.
“Dotun Oladipo was more than just a journalist. We have lost a man whose work elevated the standards of reporting and publishing in Nigeria.
“He was a mentor and source of inspiration to many young journalists. His commitment to nurturing talent and promoting responsible journalism has left an indelible mark on the industry,” Adams said.
He highlighted Oladipo’s virtues as a journalist who combined a rare blend of humility and excellence.
“He was a man who let his work speak for itself, never seeking the limelight but always ensuring that the truth was told with clarity and fairness,” he noted.
“His dedication to the craft was evident in every story he published and every editorial decision he made.”
Appraising the late journalist’s impact, Iba Adams noted that Oladipo’s work extended beyond the newsroom.
“His leadership at Eagle Online helped shape public discourse and provided a platform for critical issues affecting Nigeria. His editorial vision was characterised by a commitment to truth, fairness, and the pursuit of justice, qualities that earned him respect across the media spectrum.”
Adams called on Nigerians to remember and celebrate the life of Dotun Oladipo, urging media practitioners to emulate his dedication and ethical standards. “In mourning his loss, we must also renew our commitment to the principles he stood for. His legacy is a challenge to all of us to strive for excellence and integrity in our work,” he said.
The late Oladipo’s career spanned nearly three decades, during which he earned a reputation as an unassuming yet highly accomplished professional.
His journey in journalism saw him hold pivotal roles, including serving as the Politics Editor at PUNCH Newspapers and contributing to respected media outlets such as Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, and The Sun.
In 2012, he founded Eagle Online, where he served as Managing Editor and Chief Executive Officer, steering the publication to prominence as a trusted source of news and analysis.
