Prof. Stella Okunna, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Paul University, Awka, Anambra, has identified dishonesty and lack of diligence to academic activities as killer vices among undergraduates.
Okunna made the assertion on the sidelines of the ongoing 23rd Annual International Conference and General Meeting of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), on Thursday, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
She said that the decreasing commitment and dedication to studies among undergraduates in tertiary institutions across the country called for concern.
She urged students to desist from such killer vices to avoid future regrets.
Okunna said that diligence still paid off in academic world despite various forms of examination malpractices and other shortcuts to success.
“I hear that some of our students are not writing or publishing any materials nor attending any academic conferences.
“During our time, emphasis was on single author publication. But nowadays, I see 10 students writing one paper.
“Some do not even contribute any idea, yet their names are included when published. You are killing yourselves as undergraduates.
“I’m also aware of honest ones among you who are making us proud. Academic is a field where honesty and diligence are rewarded.
“I urge you to rise to your profession or course of study with honesty and diligence to avoid any form of regrets in future,” Okunna said.
