Dele Alli could miss the rest of the season after being charged with violent conduct by the FA after an incident during the 1-1 draw with West Brom.
The recently crowned Young Player of the Year appeared to punch opposite number Claudio Yacob in the stomach during the first-half at White Hart Lane on Monday. The 20-year-old faces a retrospective three-match ban if found guilty and would miss Spurs’ remaining fixtures.
The development is a further blow to Tottenham’s title aspirations, which were hit by Monday’s dropped points. Leicester can wrap up the title with a win at Old Trafford on Sunday.
With Leicester needing only one win from their remaining three games, the title race has turned into a near-formality already. And the potential loss of Alli for Spurs is another bitter blow for Mauricio Pochettino.
With 10 goals this season, he was deserving of his gong on Sunday night, but Monday night showed the darker side to his game which has occasionally bubbled over during the campaign. In January he threw a ball in the face of Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt and Alan Pardew also accused him of stamping on Yohan Cabaye.
In February, he appeared to drag his feet over a Fiorentina player in the Europa League. With his season seemingly over, the England midfielder will have all season to work on his discipline and will have to tread a fine line during the Euros.
