Sports Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, has congratulated the national U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, for qualifying for the final of the African Youth Championship holding in Dakar, Senegal after their 2-0 victory over Ghana’s Black Satellites.
The minister, however, cautioned the Manu Garba-led side not to rest on their oars but put in extra effort until the final is won, stressing that it would be more honourable if they go to the FIFA U-20 World Cup later in the year as African Champions.
“The Flying Eagles have done Nigeria proud by not only qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup but qualifying for the final of the African Youth Championship. Their qualification for the final is also remarkable as they beat our perennial rivals, Ghana. What remains now is for them to go all out and redouble their efforts and ensure they win the cup so that they go to the World Cup as African Champions. Their performance so far shows that their World Cup truiumph at the U-17 level two years ago was no fluke as they have now matured into a formidable side,” he stressed.
According to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Patrick Omorodion, Danagogo called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the team to accomplish the task in Dakar, Senegal by winning the trophy, stressing that as usual, the Federal Government shall appreciate their effort when it officially receives them.
It will be recalled that the Golden Eaglets also qualified to represent Africa at the FIFA U-17 World Cup later in the year but failed to win the African title as they were stopped by South Africa in the semi-final before they also lost the third place match to Guinea at the African U-17 Championship in Niamey, Niger Republic early this month.
