toyin obadinaMen of the underworld, in the early hours of Saturday, attacked an assistant editor of the Daily Newswatch Newsapers, on his way home after the day’s work.

The assistant editor of the Saturday title, Mr. Toyin Obadina, who narrowly escaped death, was attacked along the Itoikin-Old Ijebu-Ode Road, at about 1.am, while driving to his residence in Parafa area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

It was gathered that Obadina was waylaid by men of the underworld, who double-crossed him with two sport utility vehicles (SUVs) while driving in his Toyota Yaris car.

It was gathered that the victim cooperated with the thieves by submitting all he had on him, as requested by them, but the marauders went ahead and still shot him.

According to his wife, Mrs. Abiola Obadina, the thieves had collected all he had on him before shooting him twice in the stomach.

“When they stopped him, he gave them all the money that he had on him.

The thieves double-crossed him when he was coming from work. They were riding in two jeeps, and they collected everything he had on him, but one of them shot him in the belly when they were done with him. He is currently responding to treatment,” she narrated.

It was also gathered that residents within the area came to the rescue of the journalist and quickly reached his wife through his phone.

But for the first aid rendered at the Ikorodu General Hospital in the night, it might have been a different song.

According to Mrs Obadina: “With the help of neighbours and people around the place, we rushed him to Ikorodu General Hospital, and they told us to take him either to the general hospital at Gbagada. or the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for proper attention, because they lacked the facilities for such treatment, though they gave him first aid.”

However, Mr. Obadina has successfully undergone medical surgery at LASUTH and is recuperating.

Our correspondent also gathered that his vehicle had been towed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

When the Sagamu Divisional Police Officer, S.T. Bernard, was reached, he said the report was news to him.

In the same light, the Ikorodu Area Commander, Amos M. Omuiyadun, also said the report was yet to be made available to him.
