INEC Introduces Self-Service Online Voter Registration Platform
The Independent National Electoral Commission has introduced a self-service online voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters.
The initiative is part of efforts to improve access to voter registration, strengthen service delivery and encourage wider participation in the electoral process.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Nasarawa State, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq, disclosed this on Tuesday during a news briefing in Lafia.
He said the platform would become operational on Wednesday, July 8, through the commission’s Continuous Voter Registration portal.
According to him, the portal will provide step-by-step guidance for eligible citizens who want to register.
Abubakar-Sadiq said the platform would allow first-time voters to begin and complete their voter registration process using personal devices.
He said the process would include biometric capture, meaning eligible citizens would not need to physically visit an INEC office for the self-service registration.
The REC said the technology includes identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks.
According to him, these safeguards are designed to protect the credibility, accuracy and integrity of the National Register of Voters.
He said the initiative reflects INEC’s commitment to innovation, accessibility and improved public service delivery.
Abubakar-Sadiq, however, clarified that some categories of voters must still visit INEC registration centres.
He said eligible voters who had already started physical registration, those seeking transfer of voting location, and those replacing stolen or damaged Permanent Voter Cards should visit designated centres.
The REC also announced that INEC had approved a two-week extension of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
He said the third and final phase, earlier scheduled to end on July 10, would now close on July 26.
According to him, the extension followed a review of the registration exercise and feedback from INEC state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
He said the extension was meant to give more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register before future electoral activities.
Abubakar-Sadiq said the decision showed INEC’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable chance to be captured in the National Register of Voters.
He recalled that the nationwide CVR exercise began on August 18, 2025.
He said the first and second phases recorded significant participation in Nasarawa State, including registration by Persons Living with Disabilities.
The REC urged eligible residents of Nasarawa State who had not registered to use the extended window and the new technology-driven platform.
He said INEC remained committed to a voter registration process that is credible, inclusive, transparent and accessible.
Abubakar-Sadiq also said the commission would continue using technology to improve citizens’ experience and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
He commended the media, political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies and other stakeholders for supporting efforts to deepen democracy.
The new self-service platform is expected to reduce pressure on INEC offices, improve convenience for first-time voters and expand access to registration ahead of future elections.
