UNILAG crisis: A tale of three 'Elephants' and the 'Grasses' beneath, by Yemi Oke

Ogundipe

The Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Wednesday, sacked the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

Ogundipe was removed at the council’s meeting held at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja.

In attendance were 10 of the 12 council members, including the VC.
Majority of the members voted for Ogundipe’s removal.

Freedom Online learned the sack was due to the crisis between Ogundipe and
Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Wale Babalakin,
During the meeting, the Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Adebayo Ninalowo, asked the VC to excuse them and an election was conducted to remove him.
The result of the election was 6 to 4 and he was immediately removed.
Ogundipe was accused of financial impropriety and gross misconduct.

But, in a swift reaction, Ogundipe, in a statement, said he remains the VC.
He debunked the report that he had been sacked by the Governing Council.

The statement reads:

Re: Notice to the General Public on the Removal of the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos by Oladejo Azeez, Esq

The attention of the University of Lagos (Unilag) management has been drawn to the ‘Notice to the General Public on the Removal of the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos’; dated August 12, 2020 and signed by Oladejo Azeez, Esq, Registrar and Secretary to Council, stating that the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS  has been removed  from office with immediate effect.

This is untrue and a figment of his imagination. Therefore, stakeholders of Unilag and the general public are advised to disregard this mischievous disinformation about the sitting Vice Chancellor of Unilag, contained in that notice. Professor Ogundipe still remains Unilag’s Vice Chancellor.

Thank you.

Signed

Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS

Vice Chancellor, Unilag
